First Snows December 2010

On Saturday November 27 a series of storms began sweeping across WNY and these included high winds, rain, and Lake effect snow. Protection Farm lies south of Buffalo and is in a belt that is often buffeted by Lake Effect Snow off from Lake Erie. Saturday it snowed about 4 inches. Sunday- Monday it rained. Tuesday night-Wednesday it snowed a wet heavy snow and as of 9pm Wednesday night we have about 7 inches on the ground. The weather report suggests that it will continue to snow for the next 24-36 hours and so we are expecting a total of about 2 feet.

Dawn on the first day after the first snowfall 2010

The power has gone off and on several times and late today the internet went out and I had to go outside, climb a ladder and clean off the antenna. This worked, and I am back on the air.

We have some tree damage, notably to the big white pine in our back yard. Several branches are down. The snow is really heavy and wet and weighs down the lush pine bows and they have been cracking. In fact the sound reminds me of the October snowstorm that we had in Buffalo a few years back when so many trees fell victim to an early season snowstorm because they still had their leaves on.
Dawn continues

Took a walk, looked back at this beautiful site
the marsh is quite flooded, beaver activity. In fact the water between the old dam at the top right and the pond in front is at equal levels, and the dam has gone underwater

the next storm brought in the heavy wet stuff. this photo from Wednesday December 1

Winter Garden

Some heavy snow took down limbs from the White pines

It was fun to refill the feeders after the storm, or between storms. Within a few minutes we were visited by all sorts of birds and four red squirrels, and two chipmunks.
Red Cat was entertained by the new visitors to our feeder. First Red Squirrel since last spring.
